Canada Reports on The Deadly Toll of Smoking
Sunday January 18, 2004
Nearly one hundred babies under the age of one died this past year in Canada due to maternal smoking. 55 boys and 41 girls died due to Sudden Infant Death Syndome(not all SIDS deaths are related to smoking), low birth weights and respiratory problems. An article in Globe and Mail details current smoking statistics in Canada.
Health Canada takes a very pro-active position with regards to quitting tobacco. They have worked hard to educate people as to the hazards of smoking. They've also used dramatic tactics to get the attention of smokers, such as graphic pictures of smoking-related disease on cigarette packs.
