World No Tobacco Day - May 31, 2005
Monday May 30, 2005
Every year since the its inception in 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World No Tobacco Day on May 31st. The purpose behind this initiative is to raise global awareness about the dangers of using tobacco in any form.
Each year, the emphasis of the celebration is on different aspects of the dangers of tobacco use. This year's event puts the focus on Health Professionals and Tobacco Control.
From WHO: 'Health Professionals are in an excellent position that allows them to have a prominent role on tobacco control. They reach a high percentage of the population and have the opportunity to help people change their behaviour and they can give advice, guidance and answers to questions related to the consequences of tobacco use, they can help patients to stop smoking and forewarn children and adolescents of the dangers of tobacco.'
