Tammy's Quit Smoking Blog

Thursday September 1, 2005
Personal online diaries, known as weblogs or "blogs" as most call them are popular these days. We have our own blogger here at About.com Smoking Cessation - Leslie Bainbridge.

Today I want to point you in the direction of another blog from a woman who just started the journey to quit smoking, Tammy. Tammy is approaching a week smoke free.

From Tammy: "I got some sleep last night although not as much as I would have liked. At least I didn't wake up this morning completely exhausted. No problems this morning with not smoking. I really haven't had many problems at all especially considering the problems I've had trying to quit before. I'm not even going to think if I could do it without the patch. Those suckers are going on every morning."

Tammy – stick with it! The patches are invaluable (along with other smoking cessation options). Please don’t think you have to make it through this totally without help! And if you relapse, don’t beat yourself up – pick yourself up – and stop again. Sooner or later you’ll stay stopped!

It’s always helpful to read about others successes and challenges when quitting smoking. It’s never easy and knowing that you’re not alone is sooooo helpful. Thanks for the great point and for Tammy’s example!

Tammy, you don’t need the patches! All the patches do is get you out of supplying nicotine to your body through smoking, and provide it some other way. Its hard to stop smoking because it is nothing more than a nicotine addiction, and the only way to stop is to cut off the supply entirely. I was on 20 a day but I have stopped since a week ago, and I have never had a single urge for a smoke. The trick is to clearly understand that you don’t need them, that they are disgusting, that they make you feel terrible etc. Then you wont WANT to have a smoke, so you wont get the urge! Another good tactic is to calculate how much money you will spend on cigarettes in your lifetime (suppose that you will live to 75 and calculate it up) then think of that amount everytime you are faced with wanting a smoke. I read Allen Carr’s Easyway to stop smoking, and it help a hell of a lot, have a look for it!

(5) Jay says:

Oh…and by the way! If I had kept smoking and lived to be 75, I would have spent £92,400 on cigarettes in my lifetime! That thought got me to stop.

It’s been 21 days smoke free for me. I’m taking Chantix and that seems to have helped. Today however, I’ve had a very strong urge to smoke. I’m toying with the idea, but have stopped myself. Thanks for putting up your blog. It DOES help to know you are not alone. It is a huge struggle to quit, especially after over 25 years of doing it.

hello tammy stick with it i just quit. im 4 days clean .. one day at a time. trust me.. i find that im quitting more successfully than any other effort i have ever made by being confident in myself. so be a cocky quitter not a timid one. this is survival of the fittest. so being a quiet quitter will get you devoured. but if you quit loudly you will quit. just because…

keep it up Tammy. If the patch works for you then go for it. I have to agree with Jay and Paul though. I have been cigarette free for six days now with nothing but sheer willpower. I struggle with it every day but I refuse to give up. If you want it bad enough anybody can quit. You just have to be ready and really want to quit. Stay with it whatever it takes!

(11) FLaMe01 says:

I’m afraid I have to disagree with Jay & Paul about the patches, I have worn the patch the whole time, never missed a day. I think the patch has more of a psychological effect than physical really. It serves as a constant reminder of my decision to be healthy. So Tammy you’re on the right track and good luck to all of us! Whoever said quitters never win, didn’t know what they were talking about.

Tammy,

I hope the patches work for you. If at the end of the day, you need more help, you might look into cold laser therapy. I have seen great results for people who “want” to stop smoking or dipping in my 4 years of practicing. The other bloggers are right, just don’t stop trying. It’s just too important for your health as well as your pocketbook. Good Luck to You!

Did you know?
1) Smoking is responsible for 500,000 deaths every year in America alone.
2) Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to die from a smoking related cancer.

The help and advise offered by your blog is needed to stop these totally unnecessary loss of life. My vote is with you on the good that your blog is doing..

herbal treatments sound good if you want to avoid nicotine altogether. In addition they also deal with withdrawal symptoms. A whole lot more people who are failing to find joy in patches and gum are turning to herbs

(21) stop smoking tip says:

I would suggest to everyone quit these useless nicotine patches and gums. If we want to get rid of nicotine addiction, we have to kill it inside our bodies. After smoking for 16 years, i stopped straight away. I was struggling for first 3 days, but after that i became free! And it is nothing to do with will power. We have to clear our minds from false beliefs that smoking has benefits. Why? Because there is none! Good luck to everyone.

Hey Tammy, Keep going girl! I am reading stories like yours and trying to work up the courage to quit having tried a few times unsuccessfully. Only ex-smokers can really understand all the moment by moment temptations there are during the first days. Will keep checking your story – don’t be too hard on yourself. Good luck. T
