Smokers build up a heavy shield of denial over the years. We quickly learn to justify the habit we know is killing us slowly. It allows us to smoke without feeling too uncomfortable about it. We say things like, "Everything causes cancer these days - if it's not smoking, it'll be something else." Or... "I'll stop smoking before it has a chance to hurt me. I have time."
When we quit smoking, the shields come down and we begin to look at the addiction we've lived with honestly. For most of us, creating a list of reasons for quitting is a healthy way to begin cessation. It encourages us to look this habit in the face and start the healing process.
