A New Pill to Help Smokers Quit
Saturday May 13, 2006
Smoking is a hard habit to break, and quitters of the 21st century have more options available to help them succeed than ever before. For the first time in over a decade, a pill has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help people quit smoking.
Varenicline tartrate works by partially activating nicotinic receptors in the brain, resulting in diminished cravings to smoke. The drug also has the added benefit of potentially reducing smoking satisfaction if a person smokes during the course of treatment.
Discovered, developed, and marketed by Pfizer, Inc as Chantix™, this new nicotine-free quit smoking aid will be available by prescription later this year to people who have smoked for at least one year.
