The Power of Support When You Quit Smoking
Monday January 1, 2007
In all of my quit attempts over the years, I never understood the importance of a good support network. Yes, I had people in my life who wanted me to quit smoking and cheered me on, but their interest in my success dwindled within weeks. It's not that they didn't care, it's just that they didn't understand the process of recovery from nicotine addiction, and how the ups and downs of recovery affect life during that first year of cessation. When I found the Support Forum here at About.com Smoking Cessation, it didn't take long to realize that this was the missing puzzle piece I'd been looking for. I got involved and never looked back. And you know, the forum community today is much as it was when I arrived, almost 5 years ago...educational and warmly supportive.

Why Did You Quit Smoking?
"Biggest reason to quit - my health and wanted to grow old with my wife. Would hate to leave her earlier than I should! She's my driving force and motivation."
Tell Me This Will Pass
"I am three weeks today smoke free. Although I am very proud of myself, I am also an emotional wreck. For the last four days, I've been crying non stop about everything, and bless my husband for being very patient, I feel vulnerable and totally off my rocker."
New Beginnings
"O.K. it's time! My littlest peanut is almost 2 (Jamie), I'll be 55 when she graduates from high school, my Mom was dead at 59 from emphysema/copd. Will I be there when she finds the love of her life, my mom missed my wedding, the birth of her grandbaby. I could go on about all the things that she is missing. The hardest part was for my oldest daughter (she's 17), she watched grandma die for 3 years, held her hand when the firemen were giving her emergency breathing treatments and hasn't stopped crying in 8 years every time she thinks about her grandma."
