Gaylene's Cancer Journal
Sunday August 5, 2007
This past May, I introduced readers to Gaylene, a moderator at the support forum here at About.com Smoking Cessation.
Gaylene discovered she had contracted small cell lung cancer early this year, and since that time, has carefully detailed her medical journey in an online diary of sorts.
The news she has to report these days is very good: her cancer, which started as a 4x5 centimeter tumor had shrunk to just 14 millimeters (approx 1.5 inches down to just 9/16ths of an inch) when she had her last scan on June 4th.
Gay's doctors are extremely encouraged by how well she's responded to treatment, and as a preventative measure, are now doing a set of radiation treatments to her brain, because this is a common secondary site for lung cancer to travel to. Her latest journal entry describes the brain radiation procedure that started on July 25th, and the image to the right shows Gaylene in the mold made for these treatments.
Please take the time to read her account. The work she's putting into this journal is for your benefit, dear reader. It's meant to motivate you to finally put those cigarettes down if you're still smoking, or if you've quit, help you to stay that way.
Thanks for caring about others enough to share this very personal journey you're on, dear Gaylene. We are with you every step of the way.
