Benefits of Smoking Cessation

Most people think of the positive health effects they'll enjoy when they quit smoking. Better breathing; less risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke; improved circulation. The list of physical benefits is long, but there is an equally important list of psychological gains you'll experience...things like improved self-esteem and less tension in your life.

There's a great discussion going on right now at the support forum here at About.com Smoking Cessation that details the many improvements people have noticed since quitting:

Every Bit Keeps Us Quit

From Breathefree:
"I've had a few hair-pulling moments today, and a couple of snarky thoughts. And thought what's the best way to blast 'em? Remembering the good things that are happening ALREADY, into my second week (of smoking cessation). I'm only writing three, but you can share as many as you like:

  • "I smelled the coffee brewing. TWO ROOMS AWAY (I actually thought something was burning)
  • "The stain on my fingers is GONE
  • "Tomatoes DO have flavor (who knew?) Well, I guess non-smokers knew."
