Smoking and Atherosclerosis

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and the leading cause of smoking-related death as well. The toxins in cigarette smoke promote plaque formation in the arteries, which leads to atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries.

Smoking is hard on the heart.

Most people would’ve assumed that lung cancer would’ve been the largest problem for smokers. There is definitely a requirement for higher taxes on cigarettes and for more smoking bans to get the number who still smoke down.
