Fruit and Candy Flavored Cigarettes Banned in U.S.

By , About.com Guide   September 27, 2009

Follow me on:

In accordance with the authority granted them by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has put a ban on the production and marketing of fruit and candy flavored cigarettes, effective September 22, 2009.

Menthol flavoring is exempted from the ban at this time, although the FDA is investigating ways to regulate it as well as tobacco products other than cigarettes that contain fruit and candy flavorings.

The public is encouraged to report companies that continue to make, sell or ship flavored cigarettes using the form linked below.

Flavored tobacco products are meant to mask the harsh taste of plain tobacco, and are targeted specifically at children. By eliminating them from store shelves, we are taking a positive step forward in the direction of curbing nicotine addiction where it begins most often - with our youth.
