For current smokers, it seems that the wider the variety of fruits and vegetables they eat, the greater the protective benefit they might have for reducing the risk of lung cancer.

According to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR),  current smokers  cut their chances of developing squamous cell lung cancer by eating a diverse assortment of fruits and vegetables.

Using information gathered on 452,000 people for the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, researchers found  that variety of produce choices rather than the quantity eaten appeared to be responsible for this benefit.

Researchers were also quick to note that smoking remains the biggest risk for lung cancer and smoking cessation the best way to reduce the danger of developing lung cancer.

If you're still smoking, please use the resources below to get a head start on quitting.   The benefits of smoking cessation begin within 20 minutes of your last cigarette and continue to grow for years.
