Saying goodbye to an addiction that has held us prisoner for decades involves more than just recovery from the physical need to smoke. For most of us, letting go of the habit signals a powerful emotional release as well.
Over the years, About.com Smoking Cessation Forum members have contributed personal accounts of the psychological liberation that smoking cessation brings, and they've sometimes done it in the form of goodbye letters.

I'd like to introduce you to Jamie. Her goodbye letter, while unique to her personal experience, details the slavery anyone who has been addicted to nicotine feels.

I never thought of writing a goodbye letter to smoking, but it really made me think. I quit over 6 months ago, so I feel for all smokers, and recent quitters (such as Jamie).
I was lucky to find an easy way to quit smoking that worked for me, but for others it can be more difficult.
Whoever reads this, and is trying to quit, don’t give up!
Congratulations, Jamie, on your wonderful accomplishment! It’s been 3 months smoke-free for me – for good, this time: believe it. Your letter echoes my own sentiments towards cigarettes now – just wonder why it took me so long to realize it!! Regardless – we’ve gotten there! & swe’re staying there! Enjoy your new, hard-won, smoke-free life!!
Its really great to know that people are becoming health conscious and are working hard towards quitting smoking. I myself have been a smoker once and I understand that it takes a humongous effort to leave something that you have been addicted to. Kudos to all those who have taken this step and have been successful in quitting and good luck to those who are still trying. While I was reading about no smoking news and campaigns, I came across this article. It is really nice to know that NGOs/hopspials/non-profits/corporates are also putting efforts to reduce smoking amongst people. Thought you might be interested so sharing it here with you.
