The statistics are sobering: tobacco use is stealing human lives at the rate of 13,700 people worldwide, day in and day out. That adds up to approximately 5 million people annually. According to the World Health Organization, one billion lives will be lost to tobacco-related disease this century unless serious global anti-smoking measures are taken. On a personal level, these statistics mean that most of us, if we live long enough, will be touched by this epidemic of disease and death sweeping the planet.
