A smoker for 50 years, About.com Smoking Cessation support forum member Walt was kind enough to share the story of how heart disease crept into his life and how it fueled his motivation to quit smoking.
Sadly, Walt eventually lost his battle with heart disease, but may well have prolonged his life by quitting when he did. Read his story and let it help you put smoking behind you sooner rather than later.

50 year smoker! I can’t imagine. I smoked for the 12 years I was in the Army and then switched my addiction to Nicorette gum and the WalMart generic brand, That probably saved my lungs, but it cause other problems. I’m convinced that nicotine in any form is destructive to the heart and blood vessels. So, now I’m trying to kick the gum. Walt is an inspiration. If he can quit cigarettes after 50 years, I can do this. Thanks for making his story known.
