Cilia

Definition:
Cilia are fine hair-like projections from certain kinds of cells. Cilia lines the respiratory tract, and they move in rhythmic unison to "sweep" away fluids and particles within the lungs.

The tar in cigarette smoke paralyzes the cilia in the lungs, and contributes to lung diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and lung cancer.
