It wasn't long before I asked Gaylene if she'd consider being a moderator for our large quit smoking community, and happily, she agreed. As a moderator, Gay is warm-hearted and honest. She knows how to tell the truth in a loving way -- a wonderful quality that has endeared her to forum members for years.
In March 2007, Gaylene received the shocking news that she had small cell lung cancer. And if this weren't bad enough, there was more: By the time doctors found her cancer, it had spread to her thyroid and lymph nodes.
True to her caring and helpful nature, Gaylene kept a public journal at our smoking cessation forum that detailed what she went through during the 5 months of cancer treatments that followed her diagnosis. She knew that sharing her personal journey with those of us working so hard to quit smoking would be powerful medicine, and it surely was.
I'm delighted to report that in September of 2012, Gaylene celebrated a huge milestone -- 5 years cancer-free! She is an example of the power for healing that we possess when we're able to apply body, mind and soul to the task. Along with the medical treatments Gaylene received, her attitude and strong will to live are forces to be reckoned with. We can all learn a lot from her approach to life.
During her first year of cessation, Gaylene called her quit her WIN, because that's just how she looked at it. She wasn't quitting, she was winning. And you know, she still is.
If you're a smoker hoping to quit, or an ex-smoker looking to strengthen your motivation to stay smoke-free, please read all of Gaylene's cancer journal. Nothing is like the dose of reality that insight into someone's personal journey through smoking-related disease gives us. It makes us sit up and pay attention.
Don't play Russian roulette with your health. Quit smoking now.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Gay. We are grateful!
