How nicotine withdrawal affected me

I do good for awhile and then an overwhelming feeling to want a cigarette comes, my stomach feels like someone punched it and I get very edgy. If I smell one, it actually makes me sick, so that lets me know that it is all in my head. I let the tide sweep by and then I am fine for a couple of hours. The worst is first thing in the morning with coffee, and then after dinner.

How I managed nicotine withdrawal symptoms

I have quit smoking for 9 days now and still have about 3 times a day when withdrawal comes. I count to 15 and the feeling slowly goes away. It seems to just creep up on me when I least expect it. When I am distracted with working nicotine withdrawal is almost non-existent. I am going to try and repeat a verse from my favorite book and see if that makes the transition easier.

Lessons learned

It is a day to day struggle right now. I have made up my mind though and will not go back to smoking. It is something that I am doing for myself and only myself. I feel like a prisoner released from prison.

Terry Martin, Smoking Cessation Guide, says:

Congratulations on quitting, Carol. Nicotine withdrawal is an intense phase of recovery from this addiction, but it is temporary and will pass, as long as you don't smoke.Stick with it! The work you're putting in now will pay you back many times over with benefits for years to come.
