Fear of COPD

Memories of Smoking Past

My life as a smoker

I was at a youth group convention when some girls went into the bathroom for a smoke. Intrigued, I followed and had my first cigarette. It tasted awful but I wanted more. It didn't take long before I was completely hooked and smoking every day. Eventually, I smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes daily.

Why and how I quit smoking

At 10am, October 2, 2002 I smoked my last cigarette. I had gone to the doctor the day before because I could not breathe. She gave me a breathing treatment to use if I should get out of breath but I hated it since it made my heart race. She did mention "COPD" which scared the living daylights out of me. On break at work, I commented to a coworker who had quit 5 years that my throat burned when I took a drag. She never told me to quit, but she did say 'it's time' and she was right. It was at that moment that I stubbed the cigarette out and I have not looked back since.

Advice

  • I can live life freely without nicotine addiction dragging me down.
  • Nothing in my house smells like a cigarette.
  • I can breathe!
  • I have more energy.
The list goes on and on. Let's just say that not smoking is the healthiest choice anyone can make.
