My life as a smoker

I began smoking at the age of ten. Through the years I smoked about a pack and a half of cigarettes a day, sometimes up to two packs a day. Sadly, I smoked for over thirty-six years.

Why and how I quit smoking

My best friend, my Mom was a heavy smoker and developed COPD. I watched her suffer with this for many years and then I watched her die.

I knew I had to stop smoking, but it took me two years to take that step. I quit smoking on October 14, 2005 on the anniversary of my Mother's passing. I went cold turkey, no quit aids and happened upon the most amazing smoking cessation forum here at About.com. It was no accident that I found this beautiful support family, what a blessing!
