Definition:
Cigarette-like product typically composed of 60 to 80 percent tobacco, 20 to 40 percent ground cloves, and other additives. Usually machine-rolled and marketed in colorful packaging; produced in Indonesia.

Kreteks are not considered to be a safe smoking alternative. While kreteks don't contain the thousands of chemicals conventional cigarettes do, they deliver more nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar than do traditional commercial cigarettes.

Like bidi cigarettes, kreteks are often a young person's first exposure to tobacco. They are considered a "gateway" product for this reason--something that leads kids into nicotine addiction.
