Definition:
Varenicline tartrate is a smoking cessation drug that was discovered and developed by Pfizer, Inc. Marketed as Chantix™, it has the unique ability to partially activate nicotinic receptors in the brain, reducing a person's craving for nicotine when they quit smoking.

Additionally, if a person smokes during the course of varenicline treatment, the drug may impede smoking satisfaction. This could potentially help people break the cycle of addiction to nicotine.

In May of 2006, varenicline was approved for use by the FDA under the trade mark of Chantix. It will be available by prescription, and the suggested course of treatment will be 12 weeks.
